Fashionable and popular Bath, with its lovely honey-coloured stonework, has its roots in the Roman period and today is one of the Top 10 visited English cities in the UK. This course will look at the buildings and urban development of Bath from its foundation as Aquae Sulis to its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most monarchs visited Bath during their reigns and this course will also look at the generosity of King Alfred, William II and Elizabeth I towards the city.Buildings to be discussed include the Royal Crescent and the Circus, the Roman Baths and Pump Room, the Assembly Rooms and Sydney Place – where Jane Austen lived in 180-05. The building of Bath will be brought up to date with a look at the Thermae Bath Spa of 2006 and the Southgate Shopping Centre of 2009.
