The novel is completely fictional and it is based upon the idea of a Russian aristocrat receiving a sentence of house arrest vs execution. The protagonist is the fictional Count Ilyich Rostov, born in Saint Petersburg on 24th October 1889. When the Bolsheviks seized power in 1922, he begins his house arrest for the next 30 years. 

Students should obtain the novel by Amor Towles as soon as possible and start reading.
