Victoria was 18 years old when her uncle, William IV, died. A year later she was crowned at Westminster and so began a long reign which began as a teenage monarch and ended at the very beginning of the 20 th century. Often described as a stagnant age however, in reality, it was an age of great change. As a woman, she could not inherit Hanover and so this was a positive break which meant she focussed upon Great Britain.
We shall examine Victoria’s early reign and continue the narrative of the Insole family and how they acquired their wealth. We shall reflect upon the lives of those who worked for such employers and the subject of ‘Work’ in the early Victorian Age.
