In this course we will explore the history and archaeology of Tanis, one of the most intriguing sites in Lower Egypt. While not as famous as Memphis or Thebes, Tanis is a storied site where exceptional finds have been made, including the only truly intact royal tombs ever to be discovered in Egypt. Looking at the role Tanis played from the 20th Dynasty onwards, we will look at its temples, its necropoleis, the way finds from the city have informed the study of the hieroglyphic script, and at some of the most impressive artefacts retrieved from this ancient capital of Egypt.
