The European Union is a unique institution. it came into being in the period following the Second World War . Understanding why, and how it was established needs to be set against the backcloth of European civilisation and its history. Currently the Union is having to contend with a phase of profound uncertainty about its viability and future. The fracturing of Britain’s membership of the European Union in the 2016 Referendum has contributed to its predicament, thus adding to the other major problems it is having to wrestle with. Key individuals who have contributed to the creation and the development of the European Dream need to be appreciated and understood, as well as attempting or answer the deeper question as to whether Europe can be more than the sum of its parts.
