The Hanoverian dynasty had a profound impact upon British culture: arts flourished as patronage was available in abundance and there was an infusion of continental influences. The Georgian architectural style was characterised by symmetry and classical proportions. The Hanoverian period saw the establishment of institutions such as the British Museum. The Romantic period of Literature included the poets Percy Bysshe Shelley, John Keats and Lord Byron, the novelists Jane Austen and Sir Walter Scott amidst others.
