This is a complex and multi sided period, a period of gloom marked by dole queues and deep poverty on the one hand, but a period on the other hand of material improvement marked by motor cars, holidays and spectator sports. Leisure pursuits blossomed, cinemas proliferated in every corner of the land, and radio listening became a salient part of home life. Underlying it all was the upheaval created by the 1914-1918, with grief and deep anxiety about the future. The politics of the period is equally important. Politicians like Stanley Baldwin for the Conservatives and Ramsay Macdonald for Labour dominated the age, with Lloyd George and the Liberals still striving to return to the front line once more.
