What is necessary in a democracy to ensure that its citizens have faith in their government? The Weimar Republic began in 1919 with one of the most democratic constitutions that had existed up to that point. Yet it took no more than thirteen years for the German people to abandon democracy, putting their faith instead in Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. Why did democracy in Germany fail? What were the roles of political parties, the judiciary, the educational system, the economy, and the beliefs and attitudes of citizens themselves? Does Weimar teach us about what is necessary to sustain and protect democracy? The history of the Weimar Republic offers opportunities to ask searching questions about this key subject.
