Modern Languages at CEF

GWEN REES

Familiarizing oneself with another language must surely remain as important as ever in an increasingly inter-connected world and CEF is proud to offer a variety of courses: French, Italian, Spanish and Welsh are all now available. The emphasis is on listening, reading and speaking, but the clear and structured approach enables students to understand the language and to gain confidence as they apply their knowledge in practical situations. For example, students have learnt key language for shopping in France, preparing a visit to Italy, eating out in Spain and conducting an extended conversation in Welsh. Moreover, the regular cultural references provide relevant context and a stimulus for discussions.

Recently, there have been lively debates about the Notre Dame renovations, the commemorations of Napoleon’s death in addition to the advantages and disadvantages of the education system in France; meanwhile, those learning Italian have enjoyed comparing national stereotypes and traditional holidays, while an introduction to some of the country’s key authors has prepared students for a summer reading programme. The Spanish sessions have led to reflections on the country’s Easter traditions, on the history behind some of its typical dishes and an appreciation of the country’s unique outdoor markets; interestingly, learning Welsh has included allusions to contemporary culture nearer home, such as traditional folk songs, legends and St. David’s Day celebrations.

Whether you are a complete beginner or an advanced student, there is a language course for you at CEF. Take a look at the options available this autumn term!
