CERI THOMAS
Art History
I am a freelance artist, art historian and curator.
For my BA, I specialised in Italian Renaissance art and I have maintained my links with Italy.
For my MA, it was 19th and 20th century British and western art and art theory.
And for my PhD I focused on the artist Ernest Zobole within the context of art in Wales since 1945.
Consequently, my specialism is the art of Wales over the last 100 years.
As an artist, I have exhibited in Wales and abroad in group and solo shows (for example at the National Assembly for Wales and the National Library of Wales). I am a Vice President of the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art.
As an art historian, I have researched and written books, exhibition catalogues and articles on Welsh art and artists and I have given lectures. For instance, I have spoken at the Hay Festival and Llandeilo Lit Fest. Recently I produced a bilingual book on the Welsh artist Ogwyn Davies (published by Y Lolfa) and an English-language book titled ‘Shaping Art in Wales’ (published by the H’mm Foundation).
As a curator, I have originated a variety of group and solo exhibitions for venues around Wales. I curated an exhibition for the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery in Swansea from May to November 2023 and another at the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art, Conwy, throughout March 2024. In June-July, I am curating and exhibiting in a third one at the Turner House Gallery in Penarth.
I appear on television, radio and online as an artist, art historian and curator. Off air, I enjoy nature watching, gardening, dog walking and Pilates.
