One of the most infamous rulers in the history of ancient Egypt, Akhenaten is often known as the ‘heretic’ pharaoh who tried to replace the traditional Egyptian religion with a form of monotheism. This course will explore his life and rule, using historical and archaeological sources to bring to light the truth about the controversial pharaoh. Was Akhenaten a religious visionary, a disruptive revolutionary, or a shrewd politician embroiled in complex international intrigue?

The Amarna Period, starting with Akhenaten’s reforms, can be at times very hard to reconstruct: the restoration of the 19th Dynasty took great pains to erase the very memory of its rulers from history. In this course we will look at the ‘gap years’ between the end of Akhenaten’s rule and the moment in which his son Tutankhamun abandoned the new capital at Amarna. Who were Akhenaten’s successors? Whose identity is hidden behind the enigmatic Smenkhkare? Can we really reconstruct the lost years of the Amarna Period, and restore the memory of its rulers?
