The destruction of Carthage suggests that Rome was on the crest of a wave. However, the consolidation of the wars against Carthage brought near disaster to Rome. The Gracchi attempt to solve the growing problems in agriculture and land but they lose their lives in dramatic circumstances. Rome opts for a standing army, this solves some problems but creates others. The Rise of the Military General is the death knell to the Roman Republic.
